One of the most common and widespread pigeon diseases, caused by motile Gram-negative bacteria. It enters the loft through infected birds, rodents, contaminated dust or even the keeper's shoes.
Symptoms
Rapid weight loss, greenish loose droppings, joint swelling/wing boils, "twisted neck", squab deaths before 2 weeks.
Causes
Salmonella bacteria
Transmission
Introducing infected birds, rodents, inhaling contaminated dust, the keeper's shoes, cockroaches, or contact with feral pigeons. A recovered bird may remain a carrier and a source of infection.
Diagnosis
Bacterial culture and sensitivity testing from a droppings or tissue sample — culture and sensitivity matter because of carriers and antibiotic resistance; routine antibiotics without testing are not reliable.
Treatment
Antibiotic per culture/sensitivity (e.g. oxytetracycline, enrofloxacin) with strict loft hygiene.
Prevention
Regular hygiene, disinfection, rodent/pest control, quarantine new birds, water acidification below pH 4.
