A bacterial infection that is more widespread in pigeons than was previously thought. It is caused by Gram-negative bacteria that enter the loft through contaminated dust, rodent droppings, or droppings coming into contact with eggs in the nest.
Symptoms
Nest mortality in young, listlessness/weight loss in adults, loose mucoid greenish-yellow droppings, occasional respiratory signs.
Causes
Escherichia coli bacteria (Gram-negative)
Transmission
Contaminated dust, rodent droppings, and contaminated droppings coming into contact with eggs inside the nest.
Diagnosis
Laboratory examination of tissues and droppings; post-mortem examination often shows liver necrosis.
Treatment
Broad-spectrum antibiotic (sulphonamides); probiotics preferred over excessive antibiotic use to protect gut flora.
Prevention
Good loft hygiene, keep rodents from feed/water, reduce dust and ammonia levels.
