The Egyptian Ghuzar pigeon — pronounced "Ghuzar" by breeders — is Egypt's best-known fancy pigeon and the oldest living tradition of the lofts of Cairo, the Delta and Upper Egypt. It is not one breed but a large family of "houses": each house has its own look, character and standard, and all of them share the same hallmarks — the kantara (the curve of the head from beak to crown), prominent wing butts, a clean eye and a raised stance. Types of the Egyptian Ghuzar (the main houses): • Safi — one pure colour over the whole body, judged first on colour purity and the kantara. • Ablaq — a white body with colour on the wing butts and cheeks (red Ablaq, Ablaq on charcoal, hazelnut Ablaq). • Meswed — a dark head or neck with the rest light (Meswed balaha, Meswed tilteen, Meswed khanafis). • Qatqati (Otati), Talaween and Nawa'em (Makneerat) — houses with complex colours and markings where balance and distribution are what count. • The Egyptian Shami — a rare group within the Talaween (Halabi, Absi, Arnafl). • The Egyptian Kushk and the Egyptian Homer — separate Egyptian breeds listed with the family in the encyclopedia; keepers distinguish them from the Ghuzar by name ("red Ghuzar" as against "red Kushk"). How is a Ghuzar judged? Every house has an encyclopedia page with its judging criteria and weights (adding up to 100): the kantara and wing butts carry the most weight, then the eye, head and cheeks, then breast, stance and feather. The judge scores each point and adds them up — which is why one fault in the kantara costs more than three minor ones. What sets the price of a Ghuzar? The house and branch, conformity to the standard, a documented pedigree, prizes and an official evaluation, age and condition, and the seller's verification. There is no fixed price — the same bird can go for a few hundred pounds at the Friday market and for thousands at an auction between known breeders. On Ghuzar every registered Ghuzar pigeon has a permanent registration number, a pedigree tree, an ownership log and a QR that opens its page on the website — so the buyer verifies before paying.
