Utility / Meat Pigeons

Utility (meat) pigeons — large, fast-growing breeds kept mainly to produce squabs. Adult live weight runs from about 600 to 1300 g depending on breed, and squabs are marketed at 26-30 days. Selection here rests on weight, growth rate, pair fertility and squabs per year rather than on the fine detail of head, eye and colour that governs ornamental breeds.
