A virus that attacks the lymphocytes responsible for immunity. It is sometimes called "pigeon AIDS" because it weakens the immune system and opens the door to repeated secondary infections (respiratory disease, chlamydiosis, canker).
Symptoms
Dried yellow beak discharge, lethargy, thinness, dehydration, anorexia, breathing difficulty.
Causes
Pigeon Circovirus
Transmission
Bird-to-bird spread inside the loft, with a higher risk when birds of unknown health status are introduced.
Diagnosis
Post-mortem examination (enlarged, discoloured liver, haemorrhages) and histopathology of the lymphoid tissues.
Treatment
No direct antiviral treatment; focus on treating/preventing secondary infections, isolate affected birds.
Prevention
Avoid introducing birds from unknown-health lofts, remove weak youngsters early, good daily hygiene.
