A highly contagious viral disease affecting pigeons of all ages, with nervous, respiratory and digestive signs. It is caused by a mutated strain of Newcastle disease virus of moderate virulence. It is most dangerous for young birds, and infections rise in unvaccinated flocks during the racing season.
Symptoms
Torticollis, head/neck tremors, ataxia, wing and neck paralysis, greenish watery diarrhea with hemorrhage in severe cases.
Causes
Avian orthoavulavirus 1 (a moderately virulent strain of Newcastle disease virus)
Transmission
Direct and indirect infection through feed or water contaminated with droppings or nasal secretions, and inhalation of respiratory droplets from infected birds.
Diagnosis
A sample of droppings or respiratory secretions during the acute phase, followed by virus isolation or laboratory antibody detection.
Treatment
No specific antiviral treatment; supportive care with antibiotics to prevent secondary bacterial infection.
Prevention
Strict isolation, no bird movement between lofts, disinfection, 6-week post-race quarantine, vaccination per local program.
