Syngamus trachea
Educational content for breeders — not a substitute for veterinary advice. Doses and treatments here are general; actual diagnosis and treatment must be supervised by a veterinarian.

A type of worm that infects the trachea and lungs. Pigeons mostly pick it up by eating earthworms carrying the larvae, and it causes obvious breathing problems.
Symptoms
Breathing difficulty, gasping/open-mouth breathing, frequent throat-clearing attempts, general lethargy in heavy infestations.
Causes
Gapeworms (Syngamus trachea and similar species)
Transmission
Eating earthworms or intermediate-host insects carrying the larvae, or swallowing worm eggs from a contaminated environment.
Diagnosis
Observing the characteristic breathing signs, and microscopic examination of the droppings or trachea when suspected.
Treatment
Broad-spectrum anthelmintics such as moxidectin, levamisole, or ivermectin, similar to other worm protocols.
Prevention
Keep floor/ground clean, prevent earthworm buildup near the loft, routine preventive deworming.
