Capillariasis (Hairworms / Threadworms) in pigeons — illustration

One of the most common intestinal parasites of pigeons after roundworms, with a direct intestinal life cycle.

Symptoms

Vomiting, diarrhea, anemia, lethargy and loose interest in feeding/drinking in heavy infestations.

Causes

Hairworms (Capillaria spp.)

Transmission

Swallowing worm eggs present in soil or contaminated droppings.

Diagnosis

Microscopic examination of the droppings for the characteristic worm eggs.

Treatment

Methridine or moxidectin, levamisole, ivermectin depending on the case.

Prevention

Loft hygiene, preventive deworming every 6 months.
