A chronic fungal disease that mostly affects the lungs and air sacs, also known as fungal pneumonia. The fungus lives in soil and in mouldy feed.

Symptoms

Respiratory form: breathing difficulty, greenish deposits on tongue/palate. Skin form: skin scaling, feather breakage.

Causes

Aspergillus fungi (Aspergillus spp.)

Transmission

Inhalation of fungal spores from mouldy feed or a damp, poorly ventilated environment.

Diagnosis

Post-mortem examination (fungal colonies in the lungs) and microscopic examination of deposits and skin scrapings.

Treatment

Remove infection source, isolate bird. No recommended drug treatment for respiratory form; skin form treated with copper sulfate (1:2000) or mercuric chloride solution (1:500).

Prevention

Dry, well-ventilated loft, high-quality mold-free feed, vitamin supplementation.
