Candidiasis (Sour Crop / Thrush)

An acute or chronic fungal infection that mostly affects the digestive system. It develops from eating wet, mouldy or soured feed, or from contaminated drinking water.
Symptoms
Poor growth in young pigeons, crop accumulation, whitish fungal growths in throat.
Causes
The yeast Candida albicans
Transmission
Eating wet, mouldy or soured feed, or dirty drinking water.
Diagnosis
Microscopic examination of the fungal growths in the throat.
Treatment
Isolate affected bird, antifungal (e.g. nystatin), high-dose vitamin A.
Prevention
Improve feeding/watering environment, prevent feed and water contamination.
