A very common parasitic disease of the pigeon intestine, present to some degree in most flocks without signs in adult birds that have acquired enough immunity. Young birds and birds under stress (racing, showing, lack of feed or water, transport) are the most susceptible.
Symptoms
Loss of appetite, fluffed and inactive posture, loose greenish/watery droppings, weight loss, possible death in young birds.
Causes
A protozoan parasite of the genus Eimeria
Transmission
Drinking contaminated water or contact with contaminated moist droppings, especially when feed is directly soiled with droppings.
Diagnosis
Microscopic examination of the droppings (detection of oocysts).
Treatment
Amprolium, sulphonamides, clazuril, or toltrazuril.
Prevention
Prevent feed-droppings contact, disinfect drinkers, avoid stagnant water, quarantine new birds, preventive treatment for returning race birds.
